Simultaneous Determination of Ascorbic Acid and Free Malondialdehyde in Human Serum by HPLC–UV

required for the prevention of deficiency diseases such as scurvy, it also might be useful for reducing the risk of developing chronic diseases such as cancer, cardiovascular disorders, and cataracts. The protective mechanism probably is due to the antioxidant effect of ascorbic acid (10). Therefore, applications of various detection systems and analytical procedures for the separation of ascorbic acid and malondialdehyde have been reviewed extensively (8,10–18). In a previous paper, Karatas and colleagues (19) gave a simple malondialdehyde determination method with high performance liquid chromatography (HPLC). The procedure presented here was developed for the determination of ascorbic acid and malondialdehyde under the same analysis conditions. The present study reports a fast and simple method for quantification of those compounds in human serum by HPLC and applies the method to serum samples in diabetic patients and controls.
